Did you know that September is Fruits and Veggies: More Matters Month? This health initiative was created by the Produce for Better Health Foundation to encourage all Americans to up their fruit and veggie intake. Fruits and veggies affect all aspects of your health- including your eye health. Our optometrist at Redding Eye Care Center is celebrating More Matters month by encouraging all of their patients to increase the fruits and veggies that improve eye health.

Fruits and Veggies: How They Impact Vision

There are many different nutrients in fruits and veggies that affect eye health. While we all think of carrots as the go-to when it comes to a vegetable that helps with vision, there’s more to it than that. Lutein and zeaxanthin are hugely important nutrients that protect the eyes against macular degeneration and can help stop the formation of cataracts. Vitamin C is helpful in these areas as well, due to its ability to boost the immune system. Carotenoids are also thought to stop or slow the progress of many eye-related issues.

What to Eat to Protect Your Eyes

Some of the best sources of lutein and zeaxanthin are leafy green such as spinach, collard greens, and turnip greens. Avocados, peas, and broccoli are also good sources of these important nutrients. To make sure you’re getting enough vitamin C, you’ll want to up your intake of citrus fruits, such as oranges and grapefruits. Carotenoids are found in red, orange, and yellow vegetables, such as bell peppers, carrots, tomatoes, and sweet potatoes.
